Be Money Wise the Biblical Way

We’ve all heard the phrase “Money is the root of all evil.” But do you know what the Bible actually says about being money wise?

10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.” – 1 Timothy 6:10

This scripture clearly says that the LOVE of money is the root of all evil. Money itself is neither good nor bad. God calls us to be good stewards of money because it is HIS! It can sound like such a strange concept to think that your paycheck doesn’t come from your job, but really comes from the Bank of God.

Every dollar we have we owe to God. In the Bible, He gives us instructions on how to be wise with His money. He wants us to give Him our “first fruits”, the BEST of everything we have. When we receive a bonus, we give to Him first and then we can use the rest. When we get a tax refund, we give to Him first. When we do this in obedience of Him, He blesses us beyond what we can imagine! Just read this scripture.

“10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.” Malachi 3:10

Can you imagine being so overflowing in blessing that you don’t have enough room for it? That sounds like a great life to live.

Managing even the smallest money properly is the wisest thing you can do. If you misuse the five dollars He gave you, how can He trust that you would do well with $5,000? We always think that more money is the answer. But the Bible says contentment is the answer.

“5 Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5

It’s definitely hard not to worry about money. Believe me, I have felt the stress of not knowing how I was going to pay for my bills. When I started accounting for every dollar I spent and doing my best to be wise with the money God gave me, He made sure everything was taken care of. He’s always made sure I had a job, a place to live, food to eat, clothing, etc. He’s always blessed me with so much more than I ever needed. When I come to those moments where money and finances seem overwhelming, I read this scripture. Maybe it can help you too.

26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[a]28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:26 – 34
