I really love the sound of the ocean waves as they crash in the wind. And watching them at dusk as my mind gets carried away with the current. It’s watching the calm in the storm the really grounds you. I can remember the first time I saw Mission Beach. After leaving Vegas as midnight, my best friend and I arrive in San Diego far before the sun rose. We waited on the beach absorbing the magnificent scene we’d never be able to find at home. The longer we watched the drifting water, the stronger my sense of freedom grew. For the first time in my life, I didn’t feel like something was weighing me down. Not school, work, family, friends…sheer weightlessness.

I don’t want to have to explain why I speak so boldly, but I know my tongue can be a double-edged sword. I know I have strong opinions and can be more stubborn than I’d like to admit. But fighting for a Christ like nature overpowers the need to be right. We go through life hoping to always be number one, no matter the cost. It’s not always the trophy at the end we should be working towards but the relationships we’re building along the way.

If I were to follow the strange pull of what I really love, I might find myself living a completely different life. I might find myself on some tropical island doing an aerial routine from a hanging palm tree. I’d definitely be tan, but most of all, I’d be free. There wouldn’t be a boss to tell when and what time to show up, but I’d be able to just go. When God calls me, I would have no reason to hesitate.

The opposite of being led astray is finding salvation and discovering the life you’re truly meant to live. It seems impossibly illogical to believe that humans were created to slave away for money. Why would God create such a masterpiece if He never intended for us to discover it? The world demands much from us without anything in return. It demands all of our attention and every aspect of our life to reward us with pain and heartache. I find my salvation in the promise that God will  “lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil” (Matthew 6:13).
